Viet Nam attends 10th session of General Assembly of Parties to Intangible Cultural Heritage Convention
VGP – The 10th session of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is taking place at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, from June 11-12 June.
Over two days, Viet Nam along with other States Parties will discuss issues that are important for the safeguarding of living heritage around the world and the future of the Convention.
These will include notably the reflection on a broader implementation of Article 18 of the Convention and proposal for related amendments to the Operational Directives, the Plan for the use of the resources of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Fund and the accreditation of non-governmental organizations, as well as the election of the new Committee members.
Addressing the session, Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc, Chairman of the Viet Nam National UNESCO Commission spoke highly of the efforts made by the Intergovernmental Committee, the Secretariat and the member States in promoting the goals of the Convention, improving awareness on protection of intangible cultural heritages.
With 15 UNESCO-recognized cultural heritages and 550 national-level cultural heritages, Viet Nam has constantly improved its legal framework to better preserve the cultural heritages, including amendments and supplement to the Law on Cultural Heritages and adoption of the National Target Program on Cultural Development through 2045, Ha said.
He called on the member States to continue enhancing cooperation and share experience with developing and African countries to strengthen their capacity in implementing the Convention.
The Southeast Asian country is finalizing dossiers to submit to UNESCO for recognition of several intangible cultural heritages such as Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son, Kiep Bac relic and landscape complex in the northern provinces of Quang Ninh, Hai Duong, and Bac Giang; Oc Eo - Ba The archaeological site in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang, Dong Ho folk paintings among others.
Delegates to the session highly valued Viet Nam's experience and efforts in safeguarding and promoting the values of intangible cultural heritages, providing a good example for many countries.
