Viet Nam announces candidate to Int’l Tribunal for the Law of the Sea
VGP - Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh, Deputy Director of the Diplomatic Academy, has been nominated as Viet Nam’s candidate for the position of Judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) for the 2026–2035 term.

The introduction session was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son in Ha Noi on May 29.
Bui emphasized the significance of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which is known as the constitution for the oceans, serving as the legal framework governing all activities at seas and oceans, and highlighting the role of the ITLOS in protecting the integrity of the Convention.
Viet Nam's decision to nominate a candidate to the ITLOS is of great significance, reflecting the nation's consistent stance in upholding international law and being an active member contributing to the collective work of the international community.
It also demonstrates Viet Nam's dedication to promoting multilateralism, gender equality, and the role of women in international institutions.

In her exchange with ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions in Ha Noi, Nguyen shared her perspectives, vision, and strong commitment to upholding the rule of law at seas and oceans, and complying with the law with impartiality and integrity.
Nguyen is among Viet Nam's leading experts in international law, with a solid foundation of extensive knowledge and rich practical experience in teaching, research, and public speaking, particularly in the field of the law of the sea.
She currently serves as an arbitrator under Annex VII of the UNCLOS and as Vice President of the Asian Society of International Law.
Nguyen has conducted numerous studies on the settlement of maritime disputes and has chaired many conferences and seminars on regional maritime security and the implementation of the 1982 UNCLOS.
She is also the author and co-author of various books and articles published in prestigious international journals./.
