Viet Nam always treasures ties with Sri Lanka: Party chief
VGP - The Communist Party of Viet Nam and the Vietnamese State always treasure the traditional friendship and fruitful cooperation with Sri Lanka, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has said.

The Party leader made the remark during his phone talks with President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa on June 14.
The Party General Secretary expressed his hope that under the leadership of President Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka will reap more achievements in development, and soon contain the COVID-19 pandemic and restore the national economy.
Speaking highly of the positive development of Viet Nam-Sri Lanka multifaceted cooperation, General Secretary Trong suggested the two sides continue to promote mutual understanding and trust, and step up all-level meetings and exchanges.
Vietnamese and Sri Lankan agencies should utilize the existing mechanisms to further enhance collaborations in politics, economy, investment, trade, agriculture, defense, security, science and technology, culture and education, as well as to closely cooperate in consultation and mutual support in regional and international organizations, he added.
In turn, President Rajapaksa congratulated Trong on his re-election as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, while lauding the achievements the Vietnamese people and Party have attained over the past years under his leadership.
He expressed his gratitude for Viet Nam’s solidarity and support given to Sri Lanka, especially at international forums, affirming that his country wishes to continue working closely and is always ready to support Viet Nam at international forums.
General Secretary Trong thanked President Rajapaksa for his congratulations, and voiced his gratitude for the Sri Lanka people’s valuable support to Viet Nam in the country’s past resistance war and its present development cause.
Sri Lanka was one of the organizers of the first Asian-African Conference in Bandung, Indonesia in 1995, and then participated in promoting the Non-Aligned Movement. Viet Nam and Sri Lanka have fostered a traditional friendly relationship.
In the past, the people of Sri Lanka actively and strongly supported the Vietnamese people’s resistance war. Cooperation between the two countries has now been increasingly expanded in various fields.
