US, VN discuss ways to deal with climate change

VGP – The Director of the Environmental Defense Fund’s (EDF) Climate and Air Program expressed his wish to discuss with Vietnamese experts viable financial measures and policies to minimize the impacts of climate change on the environment and economy.

Mr. Peter Goldmark made the statement right before the international seminar on climate change and opportunities and economic effects for Việt Nam.

The event was held on Monday in Hà Nội by the US-Việt Nam Trade Commission-Education Forum (USVTC-EF), EDF and the Vietnamese National Assembly’s Committees for External Relations and for Science, Technology and Environment.

The seminar focused on how Việt Nam can make full use of global climate negotiations to access to ideas, technological and financial sources for reining in climate change, protect the environment and spur economic development.

Another topic on the agenda table was how Việt Nam can adapt to climate change to minimize risks and maximize environmental and economic advantages.

International experts also touched upon the climate change conference scheduled at the end of this year in Copenhagen (Denmark).

They said the conference will concentrate on approaches to build a CO2-low economy and improve the effective use of energy; measures to help poor farmers reduce greenhouse gas emission and raise income as well as new mechanisms to mobilize capital to maintain sustainable economic growth and protect the environment.
