VGP - In the 2012-2016 period, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) pledges to assist the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs in managing the project to help Viet Nam piloting the national target program on sustainable poverty reduction in 8 provinces of Ha Giang, Dien Bien, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Thanh Hoa, Quang Ngai, Kon Tum and Tra Vinh.

The Vietnamese Government sets targets of reducing poverty rate by 4% a year, and focusing resources on the poorest hamlets, communes and districts nationwide
In 2012, over 50% of ethnic people in Viet Nam lived below the poverty line, with 31% being poor in terms of food. The poverty reduction in the ethnic minority areas progressed slowly in the fields of education, healthcare, safe water, hygiene and housing.

In 2011, the Vietnamese Government set targets of reducing poverty rate by 4% a year, and focusing resources on the poorest hamlets, communes and districts nationwide. The target program on sustainable poverty reduction in 2012-2015 was approved in October 2012 to accelerate poverty reduction in the localities, improve life quality and likelihood of poor people and ethnic groups.

The project is to realize the targets and the program, through encouraging participation of poor people, improving capacity of building, realizing, managing, and monitoring poverty reduction programs and polices, speeding up poverty reduction in the poorest areas and areas inhabited by ethnic groups.

When the project is complete, poverty reduction policies will be embedded in plans and policy frames of ministries and sectors, with activities and resources mainly aimed at poor communes and districts.
