UN Under-Secretary-General praises Viet Nam’s peace keeping mission
VGP - United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-PierreLacroix highly valued Viet Nam’s practical support for UN via the peacekeeping missions and potentials for future cooperation.
Viet Nam has deployed forces to UN peacekeeping missions, including a Level-2 field hospital in South Sudan and, more recently, an engineering unit to the UN mission in Abyei, Lacroix told Viet Nam News Agency at a recent interview.
The number of the Vietnamese personnel in peacekeeping missions is steadily increasing, including both men and women as well as police officers, both in the field and at the headquarters.
The UN Under-Secretary-General appreciated the quality of Vietnam's peacekeepers, adding that these developments reflect the excellent level of cooperation between Viet Nam and the UN.
On the sidelines of the UNGA 79, the UN official met the Vietnamese Ministers of National Defense, and Public Security to discuss orientations to further promote the bilateral relations, including personnel training and capacity building.
Since 2014, the Southeast Asian nation has actively participated in UN peacekeeping operations, as evidenced by the deployment of over 800 military and police officers and soldiers to remote areas such as South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and Abyei, and the UN headquarters.
On the morning of September 24, Viet Nam deployed its Level 2 Field Hospital No. 6 and Engineering Unit No. 3 to United Nations peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and Abyei, with support from the Australian military.
The 184-member Engineering Unit, including 18 female officers, will assume duties in Abyei, succeeding Engineering Unit No. 2 at the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
The mission to South Sudan and Abyei continues this tradition, with peacekeepers prepared to assist in maintaining peace, providing medical services, and rebuilding infrastructure in some of the world’s most conflict-prone areas./.
