Top legislator meets foreign counterparts on WCSP-6 sidelines
VGP - Chairman of the National Assembly (NA) Tran Thanh Man had separate meetings with heads of delegations from several countries in Geneva, Switzerland, on July 30, on the sidelines of the sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament (WCSP 6).

During the meeting with President of the German Bundesrat Anke Rehlinger, Tran reiterated that Viet Nam highly values Germany's role and position, and treasures the strategic partnership between the two countries.
He proposed enhancing delegation exchanges at all levels, particularly between parliamentary leaders, specialized committees, and young parliamentarians.
Both sides should effectively implement existing cooperation mechanisms and coordinate activities to mark the 50th founding anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2025, suggested the Vietnamese legislator.
He called on the German parliament to soon complete the ratification of the EU–Viet Nam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), establish a Germany–Viet Nam parliamentary friendship group, and advocate for the European Commission to lift its "yellow card" warning on Viet Nam's seafood exports related to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Rehlinger underlined that Viet Nam is one of Germany's most important partners in its Indo-Pacific strategy, adding that Germany will remain one of Viet Nam's leading trading partners and investors.
The two sides vowed to promote multilateralism and continue their close coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums, especially the United Nations and inter-parliamentary platforms.
They voiced support for the peaceful settlement of disputes based on international law, the UN Charter, and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

At the meeting with Speaker of the Senate of Canada Raymonde Gagné, Tran proposed expanding exchanges between parliamentarians and enhancing cooperation at multilateral parliamentary platforms.
The Canadian leader, for her part, affirmed Canada's commitment to deepening its comprehensive partnership with Viet Nam, highlighting that the relationship is a key pillar in Canada's Indo-Pacific strategy.
She commended the Southeast Asian country's achievements in socio-economic development, institutional restructuring, and the recent amendments to its Penal Code, which reduced the number of offenses subject to death penalty.
Both sides pledged to enhance cooperation, both bilateral and at multilateral forums, and support respect for international law, including the settlement of disputes via peaceful means in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.

During the meeting with Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China Zhao Leji, Tran asserted that the Vietnamese Party, State and people hail General Secretary and President Xi Jinping's recent state visit to Viet Nam, calling it a historic milestone and a bright highlight in the bilateral relations in 2025.
The visit carries strategic significance and long-term orientation for the development of Viet Nam–China ties, he noted.
The Vietnamese top legislator informed his Chinese counterpart that the Vietnamese NA is actively preparing for the first session of the Viet Nam–China Inter-parliamentary Committee, expressing his hope to welcome Chairman Zhao to Viet Nam to co-chair this important event.
For his part, Chairman Zhao called on both sides to maintain regular strategic exchanges between the two Parties and States, implement the outcomes of the top Chinese leader's visit to Viet Nam, and further deepen cooperation between the two legislatures.
Both sides shared delight at the upcoming participation of senior leaders from the two countries in the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Viet Nam's August Revolution and National Day, as well as the 80th anniversary of the Chinese people's victory against fascism.
The same occasion, the top Vietnamese legislator had meetings with Chairwoman of the Federation Council of Russia Valentina Matviyenko, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Japan Fukushiro Nukaga, Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore Seah Kian Peng, Speaker of the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova, and President of the Federal Council of Austria Peter Samt.
At the meetings, the foreign parliamentary leaders expressed their delight at the notable progress in bilateral ties, including inter-parliamentary cooperation.
Tran suggested the leaders advance high-level visits and exchanges, actively follow up on outcomes of recent trips, and promote collaboration between parliamentary committees and agencies as well as parliamentarian groups./.
