The US expected to be VN’s biggest tuna importer

VGP - Việt Nam expects to keep the US as its biggest tuna importer after learning that the latter will import more tunas from Asia this year

February 13, 2012 5:59 PM GMT+7

According to the Việt Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP), in 2011, the US beat the EU to become Việt Nam’s biggest and most stable tuna importer. It made imports of over US $170 million, up 31.8% against 2010.

Last year, tunas brought in over US $379.3 million for Việt Nam, a year on year increasse of 29.4%. High exports were recorded in Japan, Canada, Israel, the US and Switzerland.

VASEP has said tuna traders and exporters should intensify investment in building well-equipped freezer storages and use large vessels to purchase tunas immediately after they are caught to ensure their freshness and supply essential goods to fishermen at sea.
