Testament to resilience of human spirit and capacity for reconciliation
VGP - President Joe Biden described the elevation of Viet Nam-U.S. relations to the highest level as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the capacity for reconciliation in his remarks at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
He said that he was in Ha Noi last year to meet with Vietnamese leadership and both sides elevated their ties to the highest level.
"It’s a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the capacity for reconciliation that today the United States and Viet Nam are partners and friends, and it’s proof that even from the horrors of war there is a way forward. Things can get better," stressed Biden.
Biden recalled that he was first elected to office in the United States of America as a U.S. senator in 1972. At that time, America was at war in Viet Nam, and at that point, the longest war in America’s history.
2023 marked an important milestone in Viet Nam-U.S. relations as the two countries decided to upgrade ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership the purposes of peace, cooperation, and sustainable development.
Under the new framework, leaders of the two countries underscored the fundamental principles guiding Viet Nam–U.S. relations, including respect for the United Nations Charter, international law, and respect for each other’s political system, independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
Viet Nam and the U.S. pledged to continue to deepen cooperation in the following areas to ensure the interests of the people of both countries and contribute to peace, stability, cooperation, and prosperity in the region and in the world./.
