RoK President thanks Viet Nam for supporting peace process on Korean peninsula

VGP – President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea (RoK) expressed gratitude for Viet Nam’s support for the peace process on the Korean peninsula in his meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Glasgow, Scotland on November 1.

In reply, Pham affirmed Viet Nam supports and is willing to contribute to denuclearization of, and peace and stability on the Korean peninsula.

He thanked the RoK for donating vaccines and medical equipment to help Viet Nam fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

The two leaders, who are in Glasgow for the COP26, shared their wish to further deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries through bolstering cooperation via all channels and on all aspects.

Pham took the occasion to invite President Moon to visit Viet Nam and the latter accepted the invitation with pleasure.

The same day, PM Pham met with Thai counterpart Prayut Chan-o-cha to discuss ways to step up the strategic partnership between Viet Nam and Thailand.

Pham suggested both sides step up the signing of cooperation agreement, double efforts to raise the two-way trade to US$25 billion annually in a more balanced and sustainable manner.

He asked the Thai side to help Vietnamese businesses to participate in Thailand’s retail sale chains, giving priority to Viet Nam’s key exports like rice, coffee, pepper, vegetables and seafood.

Prayut expects the two countries beef up cooperation in innovation, sustainable development, digital transformation, human resource training; applauding the sides’ close coordination at regional and international forums.

The leaders underlined the importance of vaccine as it is the key to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and reboot recovery in respective countries. PM Pham suggested both sides soon start talks on mutual recognition of vaccine passports.

They vowed to continue working closely with other ASEAN member states in building the ASEAN community and enhancing relations with the bloc’s partners. PM Pham affirmed support for Thailand’s host of APEC in 2022.

Viet Nam to take stronger actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

In his meeting with Chief Executive Officer and Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, PM Pham expressed thanks to Rodriguez for his active support for Viet Nam to address urgent environmental and climate change issues.

Pham affirmed Viet Nam will take stronger measures to reduce greenhouse gas emission by making use of its own domestic resources, along with the cooperation and support of the international community, especially from the developed countries, in terms of finance and technology, including through mechanisms under the Paris Agreement, in order to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

He welcomed and appreciated GEF’s support for developing countries to implement projects and programs in order to realize the goal of restoring the nature and neutralizing  carbon emissions by 2050.

Regarding Viet Nam-GEF cooperation for 2022-2026, Pham asked the GEF to continue assistance for Viet Nam, particularly in ensuring food security in the Mekong Delta, treatment of marine waste, preservation of biodiversity-protection of the nature-restoration of the eco-system, and realization of the country’s climate commitments in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

The GEF, established in 1991, has provided Viet Nam with more than US$916 million to finance 119 projects in the country./.
