Remittances hit over US$190 billion in 1993-2022 period
VGP – Dollars sent home by overseas Vietnamese communities reached more than US$190 billion between 1993 and 2022, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang told the audience at a conference on Wednesday.
The above figure is equivalent to the total disbursed volume of foreign direct investment inflows to the Southeast Asian country over the same period, Le added.
Last year, Viet Nam received a total of US$19 billion in remittances, up 5 percent against 2021, ranking 10th in the world. In the first 11 months this year, remittances to Ho Chi Minh City – Viet Nam's biggest economic engine – neared US$9 billion, or a year-on-year rise of more than 35 percent.
The overseas Vietnamese communities rose from 2.7 million in 2003 to around six million, a year-on-year increase of about 5 percent annually. They are living in 130 countries and territories, 80 percent of them in developed countries.
It is estimated that around 600.0000 persons hold university diploma, accounting for 10-12 percent of the total overseas Vietnamese communities. Many famous scientists are working in such fields like new technology, information technology, machinery manufacturing technology, biotechnology, aerospace technology, new materials, nano technology, and energy, according to Le.
The Deputy Foreign Minister also said overseas Vietnamese poured US$1.72 billion in 385 projects, contributing to socio-economic development and job creation in 42 out of 63 cities and provinces in Viet Nam.
In addition, around 130,000-150,000 Vietnamese workers travelled to work abroad under contracts, sending home huge financial sources each year./.
