Question: I have a brother who is living abroad. He wants to send me a gift which is a second-hand camera made in 1950s which no long works. Could I receive the gift and how much does import tariff cost?

Answer: Organizations and individuals in foreign countries are allowed to send gifts to Vietnamese people excluding prohibited cases, according to Decree 66, dated July 1, 2002 on quantities of duty-free baggage of persons existing or entering Viet Nam and quantities of gifts and donations entitled to duty exemption.

However, Item 3 of Article 9 stipulates that the receipt of any gift or donation being goods included in the list of goods whose import is prohibited shall not be permitted.

According to Appendix 1 of Decree 12, dated January 23, 2006 on the list of goods whose import or export is prohibited, second-hand consumer goods particularly electronic goods are banned from being imported to Viet Nam.

In addition, Circular 11/2012/TT-BTTT, dated July 17, 2012 of the Ministry of Information and Communications, cameras are on the list of information technology products banned from import.

In this case, your brother is not allowed to send the second-hand camera as a gift to you./.
