Yagi typhoon death toll rises to 141
VGP - As of early September 11, Yagi typhoon death toll increased to 141, according to the Viet Nam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority (VDDMA).
Clean-up efforts are underway at Lang Nu humlet, Phuc Khanh village, Bao Yen district, Lao Cai province where 35 households with 128 people were buried by massive landslide
At least 50 others are still missing due to prolonged heavy rains and floods triggered by Yagi, the strongest storm in the East Sea over the last three decades, said the VDDMA.
Cao Bang province has been the hardest-hit locality with 29 deaths and 23 missing victims, followed by Lao Cai with 45 dead and 21 missing, and Yen Bai with 37 dead and three missing.
Other affected provinces and cities include Quang Ninh (13 deaths), Hai Phong (two), Hai Duong (one), Ha Noi, Hoa Binh (five), Lang Son (three), Bac Giang (one), Tuyen Quang (two), Ha Giang (two), Lai Chau (one), Phu Tho (nine), and Vinh Phuc (two).
Typhoon Yagi hit Viet Nam since last Saturday, leaving unprecedented destruction before weakening into a tropical depression.
Though the typhoon has weakened into a tropical depression in early September 8, it continues to bring heavy rains and flooding to northern Viet Nam.
A large number of northern localities are coping with risks of floods, flashfloods and landslides of which Lao Cai province declared state of emergency (at level 2) and Yen Bai province (level 3)./.
