Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan made the above statement at the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68) that took place in New York, the U.S., on March 11.
The event is themed 'Accelerating the Achievement of Gender Equality and the Empowerment of All Women and Girls by Addressing Poverty and Strengthening Institutions and Financing with a Gender Perspective'.
It attracted the participation of the President of Switzerland, the Prime Minister of Latvia, Vice Presidents of Iran and Guatemala, Deputy Prime Minister of Eswatini, more than 100 ministers from foreign nations and over 15,000 delegates from members of UN and non-governmental organizations.
Addressing the event, the Vietnamese Vice President highlighted the need for the empowerment of women and girls in science, technology, digital transformation, in association with prevention of discrimination and violence in cyberspace.
She called for strengthening the role of women in building an international environment of peace, stability, inclusive and sustainable development, and handling non-traditional security challenges, especially responding to climate change.
She suggested countries and the UN work together to promote partnership for sustainable development, support financial resources and advise on building institutions and policies for developing countries and bolster cooperation between organizations, business networks, experts and female role models.
The Vietnamese leader highlighted Viet Nam's achievements in gender equality, including the rate of female National Assembly representatives accounting for 30.3 percent, and the rate of provinces with key female leaders making up 82.4 percent.
More than 70 percent of Viet Nam's working-age women are in the labor force while nearly 30 percent of business executives are female, she emphasized.
Recently, a national action program on women, peace and security for 2024-2030 was issued, making practical contributions to international efforts in this issue.
Viet Nam has one of the fastest indexes of progress in gender equality in economy, education, health, and politics. Viet Nam is among the fastest countries to eliminate the gender gap in the past 20 years.
The Southeast Asian nation is among countries that completed the Millennium Development Goal 3 (MDG 3) on gender equality early and is making efforts to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG5 and SDG10 on eliminating inequality, promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls./.
