The visit is made at the invitation of President Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

The visit takes place after Viet Nam excellently performed its role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 2020-2021 tenure and was recently elected to the UN Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 tenure.

During the visit, Guterres is expected to pay tribute to late President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum and attend a ceremony to mark the 45th anniversary of Viet Nam’s UN membership on October 21.

The Secretary-General will hold talks with President Phuc, and had meetings with Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue.

This is an important visit of the head of the world’s largest multilateral organization, which, as affirmed by the UN Secretary-General ahead of the trip, demonstrates the importance the UN attaches to its partnership with Viet Nam over the past 45 years.

The visit affirms that Viet Nam is an indispensable member of the UN, which has been significantly contributing to UN efforts in addressing global challenges, for peace and development in the world.

Cooperation partnership for sustainable development

Viet Nam officially joined the largest global multi-lateral organization on September 20, 1977.

So far, Viet Nam and the UN have become each other's partner, and are working together to realize 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) so as to address major development challenges facing people in Viet Nam and around the world.

Among 17 general goals and 169 specific ones of the 2030 Agenda, Viet Nam has nationalized 17 general and 115 specific ones, suitable to the development conditions and context of the country.

Regarding investment in human, the COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected the achievement of goals.

In the field of ensuring climate change adaptation and sustainable environmental development, at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh made a strong commitment to reducing net emissions to zero by 2050, and 30 percent of methane emissions by 2030.

Viet Nam and the UN have approved the Strategic Cooperation Framework for 2022 - 2026 with the focus on inclusive social development; combating climate change, natural disasters and environmental sustainability; transformation of economy and governance./.
