Superstorm Yagi kills at least 21 in North Viet Nam

These deaths include 6 in Lao Cai, 4 in Quang Ninh, 4 in Hoa Binh, 2 in Hai Phong, 1 in Ha Noi, 1 in Hai Duong, 1 in Yen Bai, 1 in Lang Son, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported.

One person is still missing in the northern province of Bac Giang, according to the ministry.

At least 229 people have been injured in Quang Ninh, Ha Noi, Hai Phong, Hai Duong, and Hoa Binh and up to 744 houses, most of them in Quang Ninh, were blown up or damaged, the ministry said.

More than 38,000 households with nearly 142,000 residents had to evacuate to safe areas, the Department added.

Localities such as Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Thai Binh, and Ha Noi experienced extensive power outage due to heavy rain and strong winds.

Yagi hit Viet Nam's northern coastline on Saturday afternoon with great intensity, causing widespread devastating consequences across multiple provinces before reaching Ha Noi Saturday evening.

The superstorm inflicted damages on trees, buildings, houses, and billboards from coastal localities like Quang Ninh, Hai Phong and mainland localities like Hai Duong, Ha Noi and Hoa Binh.

Through Yagi has weakened to a tropical pressure and is moving west-northwestward to Laos at the speed of about 15 km, moderate rain and thunderstorms and heavy rains are expected across the northern region and Thanh Hoa province in the afternoon and evening of September 8.

The rainfall is anticipated to range from 100-200mm, and may exceed 400mm in some northern areas.

Authorities also warned of landslides in northern mountainous provinces over the next few days./.
