Automatic toll collection is expected to help reduce traffic congestion, enhance transparency in toll collection activities, and eventually eliminate the existing manual toll collection.

Under the notice, both municipal and provincial People's Committees are urged to cooperate with the Directorate for Roads of Viet Nam to ensure safety and security at tollbooths.

Mixed toll payment will only be applicable at one lane of each side of a road.

Toll payment service providers must also accelerate communication campaigns to expand coverage of the service.

The ministry sets to have 80 – 90% of vehicles registering for ETC by September this year.

So far, more than 3.2 million out of 4.5 million vehicles in Viet Nam, or 71%, have registered for automatic toll payment.

Previously, fully automatic collection has been firstly compulsory on Ha Noi-Hai Phong expressway since June 1.

On early July 20, Cau Gie-Ninh Binh expressway covering over 50km from Km 210 on National Highway 1A in Ha Noi to National Highway 10 in Ninh Binh province also started applying fully automatic collection.

Earlier, electronic Toll Collection (ETC) systems on the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay expressway has also been basically completed, paving the way for the start early next month of ETC lane operations on this oft-congested road./.
