Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to attend Khamtay Siphandone's funeral
VGP - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will attend the funeral of Khamtay Siphandone, former President of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee, former President and former Prime Minister of Laos, in Vientiane on April 7, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Viet Nam declared two-day national mourning for Khamtay Siphandone on April 4-5 to honor the memory of the Laos' former leader. During this time, Government offices and public institutions as well as Viet Nam's diplomatic missions abroad flew flags at half-mask with mourning bands as prescribed while public entertainment and celebratory events were suspended.
On April 3, General Secretary To Lam led a high-ranking delegation to Vientiane to pay tribute to Khamtay Siphandone who passed awayb at 10:30am on April 2 at the age of 102.
On April 2, the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) Central Committee, the President, the Government, the National Assembly, and the Viet Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee sent a message of condolences to their Lao counterparts over the passing of Khamtay Siphandone.
The message wrote that Comrade Khamtay Siphandone is an outstanding first-generation leader, a key figure of the LPRP Central Committee, and a beloved son of the Lao people. He was a steadfast revolutionary fighter who dedicated his entire life to the cause of national independence, freedom, and the happiness of the people, as well as the prosperous development of Laos.
"Comrade Khamtay Siphandone's passing is a great loss to the Party, State, people of Laos, and his family. The Party, State, military, and people of Viet Nam have lost a great friend, and a close comrade, who stood side by side with us in the long-lasting struggles of both nations", it highlighted.
Khamtay Siphandone consistently supported Viet Nam's efforts in building and defending the country and made significant contributions to strengthening, and developing the great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between Viet Nam and Laos.
"We are confident that the Party, State, people of Laos, and the family of Comrade Khamtay Siphandone will soon overcome this immense grief and loss, and continue the work of building a prosperous and thriving Laos", read the message./.
