Prime Minister meets UN Secretary-General on margin of ASEAN Summits

VGP – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Friday met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the margin of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits in Vientiane, Laos.

Pham congratulated Guterres on the success of the UN Summit of the Future 2024 and spoke highly of the role of the UN Secretary-General and the UN agencies in maintaining peace and stability, narrowing development gap, and promoting development across the globe.

He thanked the UN for its valuable support and assistance for Viet Nam over the past nearly four decades, affirming Viet Nam attaches importance to and supports the UN's central role in global governance.

Viet Nam will continue its support for multilateralism and international law, contributions to the global efforts in fostering dialogue, and participation in the UN-led peace-keeping operations, Prime Minister Pham affirmed.

He suggested the UN continue assisting Viet Nam in enhancing resilience and capabilities to respond to natural disasters and climate change and to boost energy transition.

Guterres, for his part, congratulated on Viet Nam's socio-economic achievements, hailing Viet Nam as an "ASEAN star" and a model for peace and sustainable development, contributing to raising the voice and role of developing countries.

Guterres expects to coordinate closely with Viet Nam in implementing the outcomes of the UN Summit of the Future.

He expressed his wish that Viet Nam would continue taking the lead in promoting peace, stability, and inclusive and sustainable development across the globe.

Both sides agreed to strengthen the ASEAN-UN relations, promote ASEAN's bridging role in fostering dialogue and cooperation amid complex developments in the region and the world.

Prime Minister Pham took the occasion to thank the UN agencies for actively coordinating relief efforts to help Viet Nam overcome the consequences of Typhoon Yagi.

He extended his invitation to the UN Secretary-General to visit Viet Nam and the latter accepted the invitation with pleasure./.
