Prime Minister hosts reception for UN Under-Secretary-General
VGP – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Monday hosted a reception for Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana.
Pham reassured Viet Nam attaches importance to the role of the United Nations in promoting multilateralism to settle global issues as well as the ESCAP's contributions to socio-economic development in the Asia-Pacific region since it was founded more than 75 years ago.
Viet Nam is building a law-governed socialist State , socialist democracy and socialist-oriented market economy, Pham said.
The Southeast Asian country also aims to build an independent and self-reliant economy that increasingly integrates into the world economy, he added.
The Prime Minister said Viet Nam does not trade off social progress, equality and environment for mere growth.
He called on the United Nations in general and the ESCAP in particular to continue support for the member countries in formulating and implementing socio-economic development policies.
Alisjahbana spoke highly of Viet Nam's socio-economic development achievements and post-Covid recovery as well as the country's efforts and commitments to realize sustainable development goals (SDGs).
She pledged that the ESCAP and the United Nations agencies stand ready to assist Viet Nam in beefing up the implementation of SDGs, just energy transition, climate change adaptation, digital transformation.
Both the host and the guest expressed their concerns over the negative impacts of the current global challenges. Alisjahbana emphasized the importance of international cooperation and whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to handle these challenges./.
