Prime Minister appoints chief negotiator to discuss reciprocal trade deal with U.S.

VGP – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Saturday appointed Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien as head of the Vietnamese delegation to negotiate with the U.S. on a reciprocal trade deal.

The Government chief also appointed Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan as deputy head of the Vietnamese negotiation delegation.

Members of the delegation include Deputy Minister of Finance Cao Anh Tuan, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Hoang Trung, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Pham Duc Long, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet, Vice Governor of the State Bank of Viet Nam Pham Quang Dung, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Nguyen Ba Hoan, and Vietnamese Ambassador to the U.S. Nguyen Quoc Dung.

For the U.S. side, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent will lead the U.S. negotiation delegation.

Viet Nam and the U.S. reached an agreement to initiate negotiations on a reciprocal trade deal on April 9 during the meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

After President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on dozens of countries, including Viet Nam, General Secretary To Lam had a phone conversation with President Donald Trump on April 4.

General Secretary To Lam affirmed that Viet Nam stands ready to negotiate with the U.S. to reduce the tariffs on U.S. exports to Viet Nam to 0%, and requested the U.S. to do the same for Vietnamese exports to the U.S.

General Secretary To Lam also said that Viet Nam would continue to import more goods from the U.S., and create more favorable conditions for American companies to further invest in Viet Nam.

The two leaders also agreed to maintain discussions to soon sign an agreement between the two countries to realize the aforementioned commitments.

General Secretary To Lam sent Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc as his Special Envoy to the U.S. for further discussions to concretize the contents reached during his phone call with President Donald Trump.

Viet Nam's quick and constructive moves have beeen highly appreciated by the U.S. side and show that Viet Nam attaches importance to the relations with the U.S.

U.S. Ambassador to Viet Nam Marc E. Knapper said the two countries have had active and specific exchanges and cooperation over the past months, leading to a productive phone call between General Secretary To Lam and President Donald Trump./.
