PM: Southern key economic region has critical strategic location
VGP - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Saturday presided over a teleconference to review 15-year development of the Southeast and the Southern key economic region and to seek development orientations for the region in the upcoming time.

Minister of National Defense Phan Van Giang, Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Van Nen and Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai also attended the event.
The Southeast and the southern key economic region include Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces of Dong Nai, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Binh Duong, Binh Duong, Tay Ninh, Long An and Tien Giang.
Addressing the event, the Government leader emphasized the region has a critical strategic location in terms of economics, politics, culture, society, defense, security and diplomacy.
Covering area of 30,500 square kilometers with the population of 21.9 million people, the region's GRDP accounts for more than 35 percent of the nation's total GDP and it contributes to over 40 percent of the State budget collection.
In addition, the GDP per capita records a 1.58 time rise over the nation's average while the region's urbanization rate is 1.8 times higher than the country's./.
