Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirms Viet Nam’s strong commitment to fight climate change by placing special focus on low-carbon transformation and putting in place the roadmap on significantly reducing dependence on coal-fired power plants

During the phone call, both sides noted with pleasure at the stable growth of the Viet Nam-U.S. relations over the past more than 25 years, in which economic-trade and development cooperation are the key pillars while clean and renewable energy cooperation has become a new driving force of the bilateral ties.

Cooperation in maritime security, education and training, climate change adaptation, and science and technology has been increasingly tightened and expanded.

On the occasion, PM Pham extended thanks to the Government and people of the U.S. for donating vaccines and medical supplies to help Viet Nam combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

He also highly valued the U.S. Administration’s resolve to promote coordinated global action against climate change, adding that this is a global issue that requires global approach.

As a coastal country, Viet Nam is fully aware of the risks and challenges caused by climate change, especially in the Mekong Delta, central and northern mountainous regions, said Pham.

He affirmed Viet Nam’s strong commitment to fight climate change by placing special focus on low-carbon transformation and putting in place the roadmap on significantly reducing dependence on coal-fired power plants while raising the share of renewable energy in accordance with the country’s reality.

The Southeast Asian nation has also introduced a range of measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to promote sustainable energy development, Pham added.

He asked the American side to continue enhancing support for Viet Nam to handle war consequences, especially dioxin decontamination, thus contributing to clean the environment and fostering sustainable development in Viet Nam.

Kerry affirmed the U.S. attaches importance to the comprehensive partnership with Viet Nam and supports a strong, independent and prosperous Viet Nam.

He spoke highly of Viet Nam’s efforts in adapting to climate change, calling on the country to play a greater role in response to the global climate change crisis

The U.S. stands ready to support Viet Nam to become one of countries in the region leading the way in clean and renewable energy through concrete cooperation projects.

Regarding the upcoming 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, the UK, both PM Pham and Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry agreed that the international community needs to further strengthen cooperation in order to reach the common goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees./.
