PM Dũng heads to Myanmar for Mekong Summit

VGP - Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng and his spouse are heading to Myanmar for the 4th Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS-4) Summit and an official visit to the country on December 19-21.

The Prime Minister is accompanied by Minister-Chairman of the Office of Government Vũ Đức Đam, Minister of Construction Trịnh Đình Dũng, Minister of Planning and Investment Bùi Quang Vinh, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Đức Phát and Governor of the State Bank of Việt Nam Nguyễn Văn Bình.

Boosting the Việt Nam- Myanmar friendship

This is the first visit of the Vietnamese Prime Minister to Myanmar since he was re-elected and his third tour to the country since 2007.

Traditional ties of friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Việt Nam and Myanmar continue to be strengthened through exchanges of visits by high-ranking delegations.

Over the past ten months, two-way trade was estimated at US $125 million, up 46.6% over the same period last year.

During PM Dũng's visit to Myanmar, the two sides will discuss measures to enhance the ties of traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries, accelerate the implementation of agreements reached by senior leaders, and iron out snags for businesses when penetrating mutual markets. They will also discuss ways to promote further coordination at regional and international forums.

GMS looks to a new decade of development

Leaders of six GMSS countries including Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, China, and Việt Nam will take part in GMS-4 themed “Beyond 2012: Towards a New Decade of GMS Strategic Development Partnership”.

At the GMS-4 Summit, regional leaders will hear reports on GMS Investment and Business Conference and witness the hand-over ceremony of the post of GMS Business Forum Chair. They will also attend the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), listen to a joint statement, and attend a closed session.

GMS economic cooperation’s goal is to promote integration and infrastructure development, improve general knowledge of human resources, facilitate the cross-border transport of goods and passengers, and develop energy trade.

Việt Nam an active member of the GMS economic cooperation has benefited greatly from the initiative of the cooperation.

The country has so far engaged in more than 100 regional technical assistance (RETA) projects./.
