PM orders establishment of Renewable Energy Center
VGP - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has tasked the Ministry of Industry and Trade to join hand with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) and other relevant ministries and agencies to set up a Renewable Energy Center as an effort of Viet Nam in realizing commitments made at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26).
The center aims to train human resources and promote technology transfer and sharing of legal experience and national governance in renewable energy.
Relevant ministries and agencies are responsible for reporting the implementation of strategies and plans on green growth and climate change adaption, including contents on commitments at the COP26.
The Ministry of Justice was assigned to coordinate with the MONRE to develop a technical assistance project, proposing the United Kingdom and other development partners to help Viet Nam internalize international commitments on climate change, including ones at the COP26.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Information and Communications was requested to put forward a communications project, consisting of the establishment of information websites on green growth, green energy conversion, digital transformation and climate change.
At the COP26 in Glasgow, the UK, on November 3, 2021, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh announced Viet Nam's net-zero emissions target by 2050, reduction of methane, plan of action on forest and land use.
With the commitments, Viet Nam joined nearly 90 countries in the US- and EU-led effort to slash emissions of the potent greenhouse gas methane 30 percent by 2030 from 2020 levels, a pact aimed at tackling one of the main causes of climate change.
The joint efforts by signatories, including Viet Nam, are expected to get the world's biggest emitters of methane to join the partnership.
