PM arrives in Bangkok for 34th ASEAN Summit

He is accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, Minister-Chairman of the Government Office Mai Tien Dung, Deputy Minister of Public Security Bui Van Nam, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Quoc Dung and Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Quoc Khanh.

This is the first regional summit this year under Thailand’s ASEAN Chairmanship with the year-long theme of “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability.”

During the summit, ASEAN leaders are expected to share viewpoints and discuss orientations on cooperation and development of the ASEAN Community, addressing challenges to maintain peaceful and stable environment in the region, consolidating ASEAN solidarity, promoting economic growth and connectivity, enhancing trade and investment, improving capacity to adapt the 4th industrial revolution and responding to climate change, environmental issues, cyber security and anti-terrorism. 

The regional leaders will also talk measures to raise links between ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to improve the living standard and quality of environment for ASEAN people.

As scheduled, the participants will consider and approve some crucial documents to create foundation for the bloc’s further cooperation in realizing above priorities, including the ASEAN Leaders’ Vision Statement on Partnership for Sustainability and Bangkok Declaration on Combating Marine Debris in ASEAN Region.

The Vietnamese PM’s attendance at the 34th ASEAN Summit is expected to contribute to fostering ASEAN solidarity, unity and central role in an open and transparent architecture./.
