PM approves new children protection program

VGP – The PM has approved the children protection program for the period 2016-2020 with a view to shield children from abuses and special circumstances.

December 24, 2015 6:38 PM GMT+7

It aims to reduce the percentage of children in special circumstances to 5% and the rate of abused children.

In addition, 90% of children in special circumstances will be supported to integrate into the communities and access to development opportunities.

To realize the above goals, communication and education programs are needed to raise awareness, knowledge, and skills of local authorities, residential communities and families to protect children and to improve competence for public servants, staffs and freelancers in charge of child protection.

The new program also targets to further improve institutions and develop professional services on children protection.

Beneficiaries of the program include children from 16 to under 18 years old, especially those in special circumstances, ethnic minority groups, and children in disadvantaged areas.

Viet Nam is one of first signatories to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

Thanks to the National program on child protection for the period 2011-2015, the rate of children in special circumstances dropped from 6% in 2011 to 5.6% in 2015. Around 70% of children vulnerable to special circumstances received timely support. About 85% of children in special cases were assisted in re-integrating into the society./.
