Plan issued to implement Resolution on joining in UN peacekeeping missions
VGP – The Prime Minister has signed a decision to issue a Plan on the implementation of Resolution No. 130/2020/QH14 on Viet Nam’s participation in UN peacekeeping missions.
The Plan specifies responsibilities and tasks of ministries, ministerial-level and Government agencies to ensure the timely, synchronous and effective realization of the Resolution.
Ministries and agencies are tasked to review legal documents that are not suitable or contrary to the regulations of the Resolution and put forward necessary amendments and supplement or propose promulgation of new documents to replace outdated ones.
The Ministry of National Defense is assigned to coordinate with other ministries and agencies to develop and submit to the Government a Decree on detailed implementation of some articles of the Resolution.
The Resolution No. 130/2020/QH14 on Viet Nam’s participation in UN peacekeeping missions, adopted by the National Assembly on November 13, 2020, is scheduled to take effect from July 1, 2021.
The Resolution covers principles, forms, fields, forces, authorities, procedures for deployment, funding, along with treatment policies and State management of Viet Nam’s participation in UN peacekeeping operations.
The Southeast Asian country first joined UN peacekeeping operations in 2014 with first two military officers sent to work at the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan.
Major General Hoang Kim Phung, Director of the Viet Nam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, said that from June 2014 to December 2020, Viet Nam has sent 179 officers and soldiers, including 126 military medical staff of two level-2 field hospitals, to UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan, the Central Africa Republic and the UN Peace Operation Department at the UN headquarters.
Viet Nam is also training 259 sappers for the future engagement in peacekeeping operations at an appropriate time, the officer noted.
Viet Nam’s involvement in UN peacekeeping missions has helped promoting defense cooperation between the country and partners, enhancing its position and prestige in the regional and global arena, and contributing to Viet Nam’s success in running for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council in the 2020-2021 tenure, he said.
