Phu Quoc fish extract receives protected status in EU

VGP - The term “Phu Quoc” has been formally registered as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) in the European Union (EU) for a naturally fermented Vietnamese fish extract, the European Commission announced.

It has been added to more than 1,000 names of agricultural products and foodstuffs protected as PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) or PDO. It is the 11^th non-EU product name receiving the protected status, following Columbian coffee, Indian Darjeeling tea and eight Chinese products.

In 2009, the Phu Quoc Fish Sauce Association in Kien Giang Province applied for a PDO in the EU, after many foreign companies used the brand name Phu Quoc fish extract to sell fake products in the EU.

The Phu Quoc fish extract has been produced for 200 years and exported to the US, the EU and some Asian countries.
