One more biosphere reserve recognized

VGP – The People’s Committee of Dong Nai and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Saturday announced that Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve has become the 580th World Biosphere Reserve.

May 20, 2012 12:28 PM GMT+7

It is the 8th biosphere reserve in Vietnam. Last year, UNESCO had renamed the Cat Tien National Park as the Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve.

Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve has the total area of 966,563 hectare and is located across Southern provinces of Dong Nai, Binh Phuoc, Binh Duong and the central highland provinces of Lam Dong and Dak Nong.

The reserve is home to over 1,700 rare animal species of which 40 species are already listed on the IUCN Red List of endangered animals, such as the one-horned rhino and the pheasant.

The recognition of the reserve globally will help better protect and manage the area as well as preserve the natural environment and local ethnic culture.
