The program focuses on building new-style countryside, improving rural residents’ material and spiritual life, promoting gender equality, developing a complete and modern socio-economic infrastructure in rural areas, ensuring a green, clean, beautiful, and safe environment and landscape, and boosting traditional culture preservation, climate change adaptation, and sustainable development in the areas.

The program is expected to mobilize capital resources of VND 2.45 quadrillion (US$ 105 billion) in the 2021-2025 period.

By 2025, the program targets to have at least 80 percent of the communes recognized as new-style rural areas, with about 40 percent meeting advanced standards and at least 10 percent being model areas.

At least 50 percent of the district-level localities are hoped to earn the new-style countryside status, with at least 20 percent meeting advanced standards or named model areas.

The national target program on building new-styled rural areas was first initiated by the Government in 2010 with the aim of developing rural regions. The list of criteria includes the development of infrastructure, the improvement of production capacity, environmental protection, and the promotion of cultural values.

The program has gained encouraging results. It has helped to change the face of rural areas across the nation and raise awareness of building a new lifestyle in these areas.

Many areas have innovated new ideas to expand construction. The rural economy gained more attention and was further developed while the income of farmers kept increasing. Both the material and spiritual life of farmers has gradually improved.

As of last April, a total of 5,248 out of Viet Nam’s 8,267 communes, or 63.4 percent, fulfilled the criteria set for new-style rural areas, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development./.
