National Assembly to elect new President

VGP - The National Assembly will elect new President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam on May 22.

On May 18, the Party Central Committee agreed to introduce General To Lam, a member of the Politburo and Minister of Public Security, to the Presidential post.

General To Lam, who was born on July 10, 1957, in the northern province of Hung Yen, joined the People's Public Security Force in 1974. 

In 2016, he was elected as a member of the Politburo while serving as Minister of Public Security, a position he still holds.

According to regulations, the President will take an oath after being elected by the National Assembly. The oath taking ceremony would be shown as a live broadcast.

On May 20, the National Assembly elected Tran Thanh Man, Politburo member and Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, as new Chairman of the legislative body.

The seventh working session of the 15th NA kick-started in Ha Noi on May 20.

During the 27-day session (first phase from May 20 to June 8, second phase from June 17 to 28), the National Assembly will debate and vote on 10 bills, including amendments to the Social Insurance Law; Road Law; Road Traffic Safety and Order Law; revised Capital Law; amendments to certain provisions of the Asset Auction Law; and amendments to the Law on the Management and Use of Weapons, Explosives, and Assistive Devices (following a single-session procedure).

Deputies will also provide initial feedback on amendments to the Notary Law; Cultural Heritage Law; Geology and Minerals Law; Law on Civil Air Defense; the revised Law on Prevention and Combating of Human Trafficking; Fire Prevention and Fighting and Rescue Law; Urban and Rural Planning Law; amended Value Added Tax Law; Juvenile Justice Law; and amendments to certain provisions of the Pharmacy Law./.
