Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh

This is his first visit to Viet Nam and also the first visit to a Southeast Asian nation since the Mongolian President took office.

The visit aims to strengthen the traditional friendship between the two nations and bolster the bilateral relationship substantively across all sectors as both countries are to celebrate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year.

Delegation exchanges have been maintained over the recent years, including Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj's State visit to Viet Nam in 2013, Vietnamese Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh's official visit to Mongolia in 2017, and Chairman of the Parliament of Mongolia Miyegombo Enkhbold's visit to Viet Nam in 2018.

Mutual understanding and trust have been enhanced. Cooperation in security-defense is regarded as a crucial pillar in the bilateral relations.

In 1996, the two sides signed an agreement on trade cooperation. However, the two-way trade value remains modest as it reached US$85 million in 2022 and US$76 million over the first eight months of 2023.

Regarding multilateral aspect, both sides have bolstered effective and substantive cooperation and promoted mutual support in addressing international and regional issues of common concerns.

Mongolia backed Viet Nam to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) and become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in the 2008-2009 period and 2020-2021 period.

Meanwhile, Viet Nam advocated Mongolia to join the Executive Board of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2010-2013 term while standing ready to assist Mongolia in expanding collaboration with other ASEAN Member States and joining the APEC./.
