Master plan on inland port system approved

The master plan targets to develop a nationwide inland port system capable of meeting transportation requirements for exports, imports, raise cargo throughput at sea ports, cut costs and ensure safety.

In addition, it also aims to minimize transport congestions and protect the environment especially in urban areas and provide logistics services.

Specific goals

By 2030, the system will be able to handle about 25-30 percent of the demand for import and export container transport with a total capacity of about 11.9-17.1 million TEUs a year.

The Northern region is set to develop inland ports with a designed capacity of around 4.29-6.2 million TEUs a year, the Central and Central Highland Regions 0.9 million TEUs a year, and the Southern Region 6.8-9.5 TEUs a year.

By 2050, the system will be able to handle about 20-35 percent of the demand for import and export container transport.

The Government estimates that total investment for the implementation of the plan would be from VND 27.4 to VND 42.38 trillion.

The Government will give priority to developing inland ports along transport corridors connecting with major seaports and border gates in the northern and southern regions, such as Hai Phong Port (the North) and HCMC and Ba Ria-Vung Tau ports (the South).

Viet Nam has so far put into operation 11 inland ports, including nine in the north and two in the south. Investment preparations are underway for the construction of additional 25 inland ports, according to the Ministry of Transport./.
