Markswoman Tuyen wins Viet Nam's fourth Olympic place

VGP — Vietnamese Le Thi Mong Tuyen has qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in shooting competition.

Le Thi Mong Tuyen of Viet Nam qualifies for the Paris Olympics after her fourth finish at the Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship 2024 in Indonesia.

The national top markswoman took her slot in the women's 10m air rifle event at the Asian Pistol/Rifle Championship which is ongoing in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The tournament is an Olympic qualifier in which two best competitors of categories will secure their slots in the Paris event in July.

In the qualification round, Tuyen shot 672.8 points and was in the top-eight athletes to the finals.

Among these eight, five have already confirmed their Olympic places. As the result, three shooters -- Fatemeh Amini Pozveh from Iran, Natanya Huiyi Tan of Singapore and Tuyen of Viet Nam -- would vie for two slots.

In the finals, Tuyen scored 125.9 points to place at No 4. Pozveh had 124.2 points for No 6 while Tan had 121.9 points to sit at No 8.

The winner was Nancy Nancy of India, followed by her teammate Mehuli Ghosh and Chinese Yufan Shen.

Tuyen and Pozveh did not bring home a medal but they were awarded official Olympic slots.

"I am proud with the result and happy when people all love and support me," said Tuyen.

"I want to thank my leaders, coaches and teammates who have given me best conditions and encouraged me in training and competing. They helped me to have today achievement.

"It is only the beginning and I still need to work harder for better," Tuyen said.

Former national head coach Nguyen Thi Nhung was pleased with Tuyen's performance.

"Tuyen is a potential well-trained shooter with good qualities and technique. Her mentality is also strong. All led to her high results in competitions," said Nhung who picked Tuyen when she was in charge of the national team.

It was Viet Nam's the second Olympic slot in shooting. The first one belonged to Trinh Thu Vinh in the women's 10m air pistol.

It was also the fourth slot of the country of all sports. Two other were of cyclist Nguyen Thi That and swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang.

On January 9, duo Pham Quang Huy and Thu Vinh won Viet Nam's first gold medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event.

Responding to reporters' questions, head of Viet Nam's shooting team Vu Thi Anh Dao congratulated athletes and coaches and hoped that they would continue performing well to win high results in the next categories.

The Asian championship will last until January 18./.
