Infrastructure investment vital to boost development of Southeast region

VGP - The Southeast region - the most focal economic region in Viet Nam - is facing critical need of infrastructure development.

November 20, 2020 9:32 PM GMT+7

The region accounts for 40% of the country’s total budget revenues and 38% GDP but there are only two expressways namely HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay and HCMC-Trung Luong with total length of 92km.

Road transport plays key role in the region, serving about 80% of all freight transport from the regional localities to HCMC, leading to serious congestion on the HCMC-Trung Luong expressway and National Road 51 which was expanded to eight lanes in April 2013.

Meanwhile, National Road 22 from HCMC to Tay Ninh is narrow and increasingly congested as the number of vehicles has risen by 8% annually.

The region’s transport structure is therefore still far below the needs of its economic and social growth potential, resulting in growth slowdown.

The above situation prompted the Government to initiate a series of infrastructure projects, including Ben Luc-Long Thanh expressway, Bien Hoa-Vung Tau expressway, HCMC-Moc Bai expressway, Ring Road 3 and Long Thanh airport.

In September, the Government leaders attended ground-breaking ceremonies of three expressways, including two sub-projects of the Eastern North-South Expressway with total length of 199km.

Also in August, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc received a delegation of European investors who planned to invest in the Cai Mep Ha logistics center project worth nearly US$1 billion in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.

The logistics center could accommodate large container ships and is set to facilitate the development of inland waterway transportation that help bring agricultural products from the Mekong delta river to the world.

The Government chief also urged the Ministry of Transport to quickly finalize and report to the National Assembly on a North-South high-speed railway project, considering it the backbone of the national strategy on railway development by 2025.

Phuc tasked Dong Nai Province to complete site clearance on 1,800ha of land by October to commence the construction of the Long Thanh airport.

Experts believe that these projects are vital for the development of the Southeast region and the whole country as well./.
