The ground-breaking ceremony started on the occasion of 71st anniversary of the Liberation Day of the Capital (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2025).

The project is expected to be operational in 2027.

Addressing the groundbreaking ceremony, Duong Duc Tuan, Vice Chairman of the Ha Noi People's Committee, said the project plays a crucial role in completing the city's planned transport framework and improving connectivity between northern districts across the Red River.

"The Thuong Cat Bridge will form part of the Ring Road 3.5 network, helping share traffic flow from Ring Road 3 and boosting socio-economic development in the capital," Duong added.

Thuong Cat Bridge has a total length of the bridge and the roads at both ends of the bridge of 5.226 km, of which the main bridge length is 780 meters; the approach bridge is 3.125 km long; the roads at both ends of the bridge are 1.321 km long. The total investment is more than VND 7,303 billion (about US$290 million) funded from local budget.

It is designed with 8 lanes (6 lanes for motor vehicles and 2 primary lanes), the width of the main bridge is 35 m, the approach bridge is 31 meters. The southern approach road has a typical cross-section of 60 meters (6 lanes for motor vehicles, 2 primary lanes on the main route and 2 parallel roads). The North approach road has a typical cross-section of 50 meters (4 lanes for motor vehicles, 2 parallel roads).

The starting point of the project is located at the intersection with Ky Vu Street, Thuong Cat Ward (old Bac Tu Liem District, now Thuong Cat Ward). The end point is at the intersection with Road 23B, in Dai Mach commune, Dong Anh district (old, now Thien Loc commune).

The design is inspired by the image of the bird wing in the saying "The land is healthy, the bird is gone", which is both harmonious with the rich ecosystem of the Red River and a global symbol.

Thuong Cat is one of 10 bridges across the Red River under the Ha Noi transport planning in the 2015-2030 period. Nine other bridges are Hong Ha, Me So (on Ring Road No. 4), New Thang Long (Ring Road No. 3), Tu Lien, Vinh Tuy (second phase), Ngoc Hoi (Ring Road No. 3.5), Tran Hung Dao Bridge and Tunnel, Phu Xuyen Bridge, Van Phuc Bridge.

As scheduled, the local authorities is expected to break ground of Tran Hung Dao Bridge on October 9, fulfilling the preset plan of ground-breaking seven bridges across the Red River.

In addition, on the occasion of the Liberation Day anniversary, Ha Noi plans to start work on eight major projects including the Thuong Cat Bridge and its approach roads, phase two of Tran Hung Dao Bridge with connecting routes, the Le Hong Phong Cadre Training School, the second Ha Noi Kidney Hospital facility, the Ngoc Trai (Pearl) Opera House, the themed cultural and artistic park in the Quang An Peninsula (West Lake), an underpass at Co Linh intersection in Long Bien ward, a riverside park along the To Lich River, and Ha Noi’s Metro Line No. 2, running from Nam Thang Long to Tran Hung Dao, with the ceremony planned at Xuan Dinh depot. The city will also unveil detailed plans for Station C9 and related works between Stations C8 and C10, alongside resettlement and site clearance for the proposed square and park east of Hoan Kiem Lake in the historic centre./.
