Guinea-Bissau President embarks on official visit to Viet Nam
VGP - President of Guinea-Bissau Umaro Sissoco Embaló arrived in Ha Noi on Thursday evening, starting a four-day official visit to Viet Nam at the invitation of Party General Secretary and President To Lam.
The Guinea-Bissau delegation was welcomed at the Noi Bai International Airport by deputy head of the Presidential Office Phan Thi Kim Oanh, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Hang, Vietnamese Ambassador to Morocco and Guinea-Bissau Le Kim Quy, among others.
Prospects for comprehensive cooperation
Embaló's official visit provides a good chance for the two countries to boost comprehensive ties, said Vietnamese Ambassador to Morocco and Guinea-Bissau Le Kim Quy.
This is the first visit to Viet Nam by the President of Guinea-Bissau since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1973.
At the regional level, the reception for heads of state of African countries, including Guinea-Bissau, by Party General Secretary and President To Lam in the first months of his new positions underscores the importance Viet Nam attaches to and its close affections towards its traditional African friends.
The visit is another step foward to the implementation of Viet Nam's plan on developing relations between Viet Nam and Middle East-Africa nations in the 2016-25 period.
In the economic sphere, bilateral trade has steadily grown, from US$56.1 million in 2020 to nearly US$170 million in 2023.
Guinea-Bissau is currently one of the top five African suppliers of raw cashew nuts for Viet Nam, making the Southeast Asian nation the third largest export market of Guinea-Bissau.
However, cooperation between Viet Nam and Guinea-Bissau has not yet matched the needs and potential of both sides./.
