Gov't sets up steering committee for nuclear power plant construction project
VGP – The Government has decided to set up a steering committee for nuclear power plant construction project led by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
The Prime Minister will be assisted by Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, and Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien as deputy heads of the committee.
Members of the committee include: Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Do Thanh Trung, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh, Deputy Minister of National Defense Vu Hai San, Deputy Minister of Public Security Pham The Tung, Deputy Minister of Construction Pham Minh Ha, Deputy Minister of Finance Bui Van Khang, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affair Nguyen Minh Hang, Deputy Minister of Justice Tran Tien Dung, Deputy Minister of Transport Le Anh Tuan, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Bui Hoang Phuong, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Ten, Vice Chairman of the Government Office Nguyen Sy Hiep, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly's Science-Technology and Environment Ta Dinh Thi, Chairman of the Ninh Thuan Provincial People's Committee Tran Quoc Nam, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN) Dang Hoang An, and President and CEO of the Electricity of Viet Nam Nguyen Anh Tuan.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade is the permanent body of the committee.
The committee shall be responsible for implementing the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project; direct amendments and supplementation to legal regulations for nuclear power development; direct the research and development of nuclear power program and submit to competent authorities for consideration and approval; direct international cooperation with other countries, international organizations and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in nuclear power development.
The committee shall regularly report the progress of the implementation of the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project and other assigned tasks.
The Government submitted the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project in 2009 for consideration and approval of the investment policy of the project.
In November 2016, the National Assembly decided to stop the aforesaid project due to the country's "economic conditions".
The project involves building two nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 400MW in the central province of NinhThuan.
In November 2024, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) agreed on the policy to restart the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project in a bid to firmly ensure national energy security.
The Central Committee assigned the Politburo to direct relevant agencies and localities to develop a Project on nuclear power development in Viet Nam and submit it to competent authorities for consideration.
The CPV Central Committee also agreed to continue studying the nuclear power program in Viet Nam to enhance the country's scientific and technological capabilities and sustainable development.
On November 30, 2024, the National Assembly approved the Government's proposal to restart the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project at its 8th working session.
The Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN) has been assigned by the Government to be the investor of the project./.
