Gov’t presses subbordinate levels to take actions against plastic waste

VGP – PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc has recently issued Directive 33/CT-TTg on management, recycling, treatment, and reduction of plastic waste as plastic pollution has become one of the biggest challenges in our world today.

August 24, 2020 3:36 PM GMT+7

Accordingly, the Government chief tasked minsters, ministerial-level leaders, and local leaders to issue directives and plans with a view to minimizing classifying, recycling plastic waste, prior to October 30, 2020.

Specifically, state agencies, public non-business units will take the lead in minimizing plastic wastes and disposable plastics including plastic bags, plastic bottles, straws, foam food containers.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) was assigned to perfect legislation on solid waste management in the direction of considering waste and plastic waste as resources; beef up the development of circular economic models; and build technical environmental barriers against products and goods containing micro-plastic particles, plastic nanoparticles and plastic bags.

The MNRE works with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to build national database on plastic usage and plastic waste and to propose a project on establishment of industrial parks for centralized plastics recycling

Import of plastic scrap must be seriously implemented in line with regulations on environmental protection.

The Ministry of Finance was asked to put forward amendments to the Law on Environmental Protection Tax towards expanding coverage of levies on plastic bags and other plastic products.

Around the world, one million plastic drinking bottles are purchased every minute, while up to 5 trillion single-use plastic bags are used worldwide every year. In total, half of all plastic produced is designed to be used only once - and then thrown away, according to the UN Environment.

Today, the world produces about 300 million tons of plastic waste every year, equivalent to the weight of the entire human population.

Being aware of the severity of global plastic pollution, Viet Nam has committed to take drastic actions to reduce plastic waste in order to protect marine environment.

In 2017, the country officially accessed to the UN Environment Assembly of the UN Environment Program’s Resolution on marine litter and microplastics.

The Southeast Asian country stands ready to promote cooperation with all countries and partners in the development of marine economy, on the basis of equality, mutual benefit and observance of international law towards the common goal of clean, peaceful and stable oceans for the common prosperity.
