The Government chief tasked the Viet Nam Electricity (EVN) as the investor of the first nuclear power plant located in Phuoc Dinh commune, Thuan Nam district of the central province of Ninh Thuan.

Meanwhile, the Viet Nam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) is the investor of the second nuclear power plant located in Vinh Hai commune of Ninh Thuan province's Ninh Hai district.

In a bid to create legal foundation for the two plants, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is reviewing and supplementing the 8th edition of the National Power Development Plan while the Ministry of Science and Technology is putting forward amendments and supplementation to the Law on Atomic Energy.

The National Assembly approved the Government's proposal to restart the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project at its 8th working session on November 30, 2024.

The project involves building two nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 400MW in the central province of NinhThuan.

The project is of significant importance to ensure sufficient power supply for the economy. The Government estimates that power consumption will increase by 12-13percent in 2025 and reach 1,200 billion kWh by 2045 compared to 1,000 billion kWh in the 8th National Power Development Plan./.
