Construction of the four-lane expressway section is expected to complete by the end of this year, allowing vehicles to travel at a speed of 80km per hour. It will be expanded in the second phase until 2025.

Once completed, the expressway will help ease congestion on National Highway 2 and cut travel time among Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang and Phu Tho provinces with the northern key economic region and Ha Noi, while boosting the efficiency of Noi Bai-Lao Cai expressway.

Speaking during the inspection tour, Prime Minister Pham tasked relevant ministries and sectors as well as Tuyen Quang and Phu Tho provinces to work together to adjust the investment policy of the project to ensure the expressway has at least four completed lanes allowing vehicles to travel at 120km per hour.

He assigned the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to work with relevant localities to ensure the supply of construction materials for the project.

Pham also asked Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha to oversee and direct the project, striving to complete its first phase before December 31.

Earlier this year, Tuyen Quang province had decided to invest VND6.8 trillion (US$207 million) to construct an expressway connecting with its northern neighbour, Ha Giang province.

The investment capital consists of more than VND4.49 trillion (US$189 million) from the State budget and over VND2.3 trillion (US$97 million) from the local budget.

The project's implementation period is scheduled to last until 2025.

The two-lane expressway is designed to have a total length of 77km, starting from the intersection of Tuyen Quang-Phu Tho Expressway and National Highway 2D in Nhu Khe Commune, Yen Son District of Tuyen Quang province to Km77 + 00 through Ha Giang province.
