Gov't adopts action plan to implement Global Coal to Clean Power Transition Statement
VGP - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has approved an action plan to implement the Global Coal to Clean Power Transition Statement.

Under the plan, the Government targets to actively participate in the global trend of low-carbon development, mobilize domestic and international resources for power development, apply clean fuel co-firing technology to gradually reduce emissions in coal-fired power plants, and adopt a roadmap for deactivating coal-fired power plants using outdated technology.
The plan targets to promote the exploitation and maximization of renewable energy sources for electricity generation, ensuring a stable and sufficient power supply with reasonable prices, while contributing to global climate change mitigation efforts.
It also focuses on developing and implementing comprehensive tasks and solutions to address climate change and energy transition, with a view to achieving net-zero emissions target by 2050.
By 2030, the share of electricity generated from renewable energy sources, including hydropower is expected to account for about 29.2-37.7 percent.
The Government will pilot carbon capture systems at selected aging coal power plants and consider decommissioning around 540 MW of coal-fired capacity at Pha Lai and Ninh Binh coal-fired power plants if efficiency and emission reduction targets cannot be met.
The Government will also strive to complete the construction of the Ninh Thuan nuclear power plant project within five years in a bid to ensure energy security and environmental protection.
It targets to develop at least 1,160 MW of clean energy sources by 2045 and 3,335 MW by 2050 while considering to decommission approximately 1,160 MW of coal-fired capacity by 2045 and 3,335 MW by 2050.
From 2050 onwards, coal will be phased out in electricity generation in Viet Nam.
At the UNFCCC’s COP26 meeting in 2021, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh pledged that Viet Nam would reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Viet Nam has also signed the Global Coal to CleanPower Transition Statement, under which signatoriescommit to cease unabated coal power generationby 2040, and to cease permit issuance for unabatedcoal power projects that do not have finance closure./.
