Foreign Minister meets U.S. Trade Representative
VGP - Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai discussed measures to promote the bilateral relationship during their meeting in Ha Noi on February 13.
This is the first visit at the economic ministerial level of the Biden administration to Viet Nam, starting a series of activities marking the 10th anniversary of the Viet Nam-U.S. comprehensive partnership.
Both sides spoke highly of the achievements of the bilateral trade which increased by 11 percent in 2022 to over US$123 billion.
They referred to the bilateral cooperation within the APEC, the discussion on the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF), sub-regional cooperation, climate change adaption, energy transition and digital transformation.
Both sides emphasized the significance of promoting free, open and fair trade based on international law and sustainable and inclusive growth in the region, in which ASEAN Member States play a central role.
Tai highly valued the participation of Viet Nam in the regional economic connectivity process, adding that the U.S. Government gives priority to enhancing economic recovery and development in a sustainable, self-reliant and inclusive manner.
The U.S. focuses on consolidating the partnership with countries in the Indo-Pacific and endorsing cooperation frameworks to establish an effective and sustainable economic and investment ecosystem, thus creating a new impetus for regional economic development, she noted.
Meanwhile, Bui highly valued contributions of Tai in fostering economic and trade ties with Viet Nam.
He highlighted the potential of bilateral cooperation in climate change response, energy conversion, digital transformation and green growth.
Bui suggested the U.S. soon realize its commitments to supporting Viet Nam and other countries in implementing international agreements on climate change adaption, including the Just Energy Transition Partnership.
Viet Nam is willing to work with the U.S. to successfully organize the APEC 2023, he asserted.
