At the conference, Mr. Nguyễn Thế Phương, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, and Mr. Stefano Sannino, Deputy Director-General responsible for relations with Asia and Latin America of the EC’s Directorate-General for External Relations, briefly reviewed achievements and asserted their commitment to negotiations for a new Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA).

The aim of the Agreement is to strengthen the current institutional framework as well as open and diversify dialogues and cooperation between the EC and Việt Nam.
The EC reiterated its commitment to Việt Nam in promoting socio-economic development and reforms. The Commission will continue to assist Việt Nam in poverty reduction, administrative and judiciary reforms, and trade.

Mr. Stefano Sannino also revealed that the EC will fund €2 million for Việt Nam to develop nuclear power safety.

In 2010, the European Union (EU) and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) are expected to organize the EU-ASEAN Civil Aviation Meeting and establish the Joint Working Group to control wood import into the EU market.
