The island, located in Hai Phong City, ranks third in the region—behind Thailand’s Koh Chang and Malaysia’s Penang.

Covering 101 square miles, Cat Ba offers a wealth of adventure experiences, noted reporter Sarah Gillespie. While many travelers visit briefly before heading to nearby smaller islands, thrill-seekers often stay longer to explore its rugged beauty.

According to the magazine, Cat Ba's limestone karst cliffs create a paradise for rock climbers, while Butterfly Valley—with its caves and overhangs—has become a hotspot for deep-water soloing, or bouldering without ropes over deep water.

For those seeking a safer yet equally stunning experience, visitors can hike to the summit of Ngu Lam Peak or kayak through waters illuminated by bioluminescent plankton.

Other destinations featured among the top eight islands to explore in Southeast Asia include Indonesia's Komodo and Java, the Philippines' Panay and Isla Verde, and Don Khong in Laos./.
