Weekly COVID-19 Update: VN Reports 119 New COVID-19 Cases Last Week

The latest patients include 25 local infections in Yen Bai (one), Ha Nam (13), Hung Yen (2), Ha Noi (three), and Vinh Phuc (six).

Meanwhile, the imported cases comprise five foreign nationals from India (three), the UK (one), and Iran (one). The rest are Vietnamese brought home from Japan (27), the RoK (two), Russia (seven), UAE (two), Germany (two), Poland (two), the Philippines (28), Indonesia (12), Canada (one), Romania (one), or returned to Viet Nam via border gates (five).

The above cases took the national tally to 2,962 infection cases including 1,595 locally-transmitted cases.

During the last week, 33 more patients were declared free of the virus, bringing the total recoveries to 2,549 whille the death toll remained at 35.

An additional 6,143 people received shots of COVID-19 vaccine on May 2, raising the total number of vaccinated people to 532, 247, most of whom are frontliners in the pandemic fight.

After locally-infected cases were detected in late April, localities around the country have tightened epidemic prevention measures and decided to close non-essential services such as karaoke, discotheques, and bars.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on May 2 requested that the responsibility of individuals and organizations on COVID-19 spread must be made clear, and asked competent authorities to impose tough punishment to those that violate regulations on COVID-19 prevention and control.

Earlier, on April 30, the PM extended his sympathy to his Lao counterpart Phankham Viphavanh and informed him on the provision of US$500,000 in urgent aid from the Vietnamese Party, State and people to help Laos battle the new COVID-19 resurgence.

The Ministry of Health asked local authorities to consider suspension of unnecessary services like bars, karaoke parlors, discotheques and game rooms to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other representative agencies of Viet Nam in India were working closely with competent agencies and airlines in Viet Nam to prepare plans to support Vietnamese citizens and arrange flights to bring them home, according to the ministry's Vice Spokesman Doan Khac Viet on April 29./.
