The titles, which were part of the 2020 ASEAN Tourism Forum 2020 (ATF 2020), were announced at a ceremony held in Brunei.
The winning cities received a certificate of appreciation and a plaque with the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Label. The award remains valid for three years.
The awards also honoured good traffic infrastructure and environmentally-friendly transportation.

To be recognized as "ASEAN Clean Tourism City" cities must ensure 7 criteria: general environmental management; streets are clean and hygienic; good management of waste and wastewater; authorities and communities are aware of environmental protection and street sanitation; lots of green space; have good conditions to ensure health safety, urban security for tourists; infrastructure and facilities for tourism suitable and meet the standards.
This is an opportunity for localities to advertise and improve the tourism promotion effectiveness of the city, Vietnam and the national destination brand.

This is the second time Hue city has been honoured with the award. Earlier, in 2018, the three cities of Hue, Hoi An (Quang Nam province) and Da Lat (Lam Dong province) received the title for the 2018-2020 period.
