This is the first time Vietnamese banana made debut in the Japanese retail market, said Nguyen Trung Dung, Commercial Counselor of the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan.
Mr. Dung revealed that a Vietnamese company was allowed to initially ship around 15 tons of banana to Japan. So far, Vietnamese banana are available at 10 supermarkets of Don Kihote in Tokyo and surrounding localities such as Saitama and Chiba.
As schedule, Japan will double banana imports from Viet Nam and expand distribution chains.
The Japan market has high demand on banana imports with an approximately 1 million ton per year. The Philippines holds around 85% of the market share. However, Japanese enterprises intend to diversify supply sources.
Earlier, Viet Nam firstly exported banana to Japan in early 2013 but the Vietnamese fruits were not on the shelves of large supermarkets like Don Kihote./.
