ASEAN Foreign Ministers' interface with Representatives of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, July 8, 2025
Addressing the event, Bui expressed hope that AICHR would continue playing a key role in advancing the implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and other ASEAN cooperation strategies.
AICHR should pay attention to addressing challenges such as poverty, harsh working conditions, and impacts of technology on human rights, he said.
Bui informed that Viet Nam will host an AICHR workshop on the rights of seafarers later this year to raise the awareness, share best practices, and promote cooperation in this crucial area.
The same day, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister also attended the Meeting of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Commission.
Bui underscored the significance of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Treaty, which marks its 30th anniversary this year.
The Treaty will continue to be the cornerstone of regional security architecture and ASEAN's practical contribution to global disarmament efforts, especially amid rising nuclear threats worldwide, he said.
Bui announced that Viet Nam is finalizing domestic procedures to support Timor-Leste's accession to the SEANWFZ Treaty.
He also called for continued dialogue between ASEAN and nuclear-weapon states to encourage them to sign the SEANWFZ Protocol. Additionally, he stressed greater internal coordination within ASEAN to form a unified stance on the issue.
Bui said that Viet Nam will preside over the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in 2026 and expressed hope for strong cooperation and support from ASEAN member states in this endeavor./.
